KVEC’s Editorial Published by Lexington Herald Leader

A column published recently in the Lexington Herald-Leader entitled “Survey surprise: Most Kentucky companies face a talent shortage” by columnist Tom Eblen prompted Jeff Hawkins, Executive Director of the Kentucky Valley Education Cooperative (KVEC), to respond with an editorial that elaborates on how the 21 districts and their schools in the KVEC region are going above and beyond traditional instruction to ensure that students are prepared for college and/or the workforce upon graduation from high school.  Dr. Hawkins commented,  “It is a talent pipeline challenge that requires regional solutions, which must begin in our schools and communities. To put it bluntly, there is no shortage of talent in our state, only a lack of vision and collaboration.”

Dr. Hawkins discussed how KVEC is “partnering with local employers to develop the talents of our young people and increase their awareness of career pathways in our region and state”.  He emphasized that students in the region are designing, building and selling tiny houses at eight of the Area Technology Centers this next school year.  Collaboration between several local, state and federal entities is underway to create a drone port for the manufacture, testing and repair of unmanned technology.  He commented, “In July, more than 20 organizations and experts will meet in Hazard to discuss developing new micro-credentials for personalized professional learning and licensure renewal for teachers”.
