This is a very interactive and engaging activity for teaching area and perimeter. It also allows for exploration and critical thinking/problem solving. Students are given a handful of cheez it crackers and a worksheet. The worksheet asks them to create different dimensions for the same area, or for example create a shape with an area of 10 and a perimeter of 14 and they have to demonstrate these concepts using the cheez its. This is the first year I have integrated this activity with these concepts and I feel it allowed my students a more hands on approach and that for the first time they really grasped the concept that area “covers something” and perimeter is the outside.
That’s what’s called “yummy math”. It’s not surprising that students grasped the concept better. Hands on, practical math is so important!
