Here lately my students learned about the concept of scale models and why it is important to be able to understand the differences that happen when you shrink or enlarge something. For a project I allowed my students to find a building or item that they feel would be something that they could create a scale model of. This allows for creativity within the classroom while also showing students the real life applications that can be used in geometry. It also was important that they were able to properly scale their models. For some of them it was slightly more difficult (whether the building was real or not) but it was impressive to see the type of work students would provide.
    • Wow – so many different types of models – that’s so great! (Love Mr. Fredricksen’s house) I could see students learning almost as much from examining differences in each other’s models as creating their own.
