KVEC Fall FIRESUMMIT Oct.2019

Educators, community leaders, and students gathered on October 23, 2019, for the Fall FIRESummit hosted by the Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative (KVEC). The FIRESummit spotlights hard-working innovators in eastern Kentucky that go the extra mile to forge innovation in rural education!

Over 700 persons participated in person the Forging Innovation in Rural Education (FIRE) Summit, a multi-district K-12 educational professional learning event in Pikeville, KY. More than 200 teachers and students from 23 school district teams presented at the Summit sponsored by the Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative (KVEC).

Educators shared brand new innovations in learning they are going to be implementing in their classrooms using the innovation grants awarded through KVEC.  The KVEC Student Senate shared “Community Challenge” projects that will offer unique solutions to real-world challenges.

The Building It Forward Project (Tiny House) is back with Tiny House Project teams consisting of Ashland, Breathitt, Floyd, Knott, Lee, and Pike (Phelps). By taking learning outside and getting hands-on experience, students are able to learn basic workplace behavior and develop specific skills within an industry. Over 950 innovative best practices have been shared over recent years.

There were also 17 Activating Catalytic Transformation (ACT) sessions. Presented by school-level teams consisting of the principal, teacher leaders, and central office administrators who are identifying a problem of practice and developing a theory of action that will lead to short and long-term outcomes for students. Over 950 innovative best practices have been shared over recent years.

The event was streamed LIVE on The Holler from 10 locations across the Appalachian Wireless Arena and featured educators showcasing their upcoming projects in one of 27 breakout sessions over the course of the day. Also, all videos are available via Youtube and are all located conveniently on a playlist for your viewing pleasure. The FIRESummit sessions have been archived and are available at summit.theholler.org.
