Dia de los Muertos is a holiday celebrated to honor the dead on November 2. On November 1 they celebrate All Saints Day which is to honor all the children who have passed on. They hold celebrations in the streets with musicians, food, and dancing. Many will sing and dance all through the night celebrating. They also decorate the graves of loved ones with candles and flower petals. The flower petal trail is to show your dead which altar is theirs. On children’s graves and altars people will place toys for the passed children to play with when they return on All Saints Day. Days before the event people can be seen cleaning the streets and graves preparing for the event. Sugar Skulls decorated with paint and flowers represent life after death. The Merigold flower, Cempoaxochitl, is known to be the flower of the dead. They buy chocolates and special candies to put on the altar’s of their loved ones. They also cook huge meals in celebration of the event. Many write poems about their loved ones or about Dia de los Muertos itself. Another tradition practice is making sand sculptures. This tradition is to honor life after death. Many people try to avoid death, while many others celebrate it. I am a Spanish 1A student
