Hi, my name is Shyla Maynard. I am a senior at Pike County Central High School. I am a peer tutor in Mrs. Wrights classroom. This year, we have gone on many field trips with the class and done many activities within the classroom. I love being a mentor because I have developed many relationships and connections with all of the students in the class.

Hi my name is Larra Jones. I am a senior at Pike County Central High School. I love being a peer tutor because it has helped me become more familiar with special needs students; especially because I would like to be a teacher in the future. I love seeing these children every day and making strong relationships with them.

Hi, my name is Madison Gray. I am a senior at Pike Central High School. I love being a peer tutor in Mrs. Wrights class because I have loved to watch these kids learn and grow every day. I've always wanted to be a teacher, so I knew this was something I wanted to do to get more experience with that as well. I'm so thankful for the opportunity to make connections and learn more about all the students' lives.

Hello, my name is Walker Johnson, and I am a peer tutor in the life management department at Pike Central. This opportunity has been a blessing I love being a friend that the kids can rely on for any issue whether it be in the class or outside of it. I absolutely love seeing the kids everyday and they seem to love me too and I would like to thank Dr.Will for giving us the chance to not only be a great model for these students but a great friend too.

Hello, my name is Mathew Daniels, I am a senior at Pike Central.  I have really enjoyed my time as a peer mentor.  I always have fun participating in activities and helping the students.  Some activities include money math, science, counting money scenarios and some mock environments.  One time I played a cashier and students had to check out and get the correct change to pay.  Another activity included getting sand and pouring water onto it to simulate erosion.  One of the most exciting tasks is the field trips.  Community Based Instructions as they are also called.  College campus tours, grocery shopping, Christmas shopping, pumpkin patch trip around October, all of those I get to do with the students.  I love helping these kids.

Hi, my name is Logan Workman, and I am a senior at Pike Central.  When I first decided to be a peer tutor, I was so nervous, but this has changed since I have become one.  I enjoy my time spent with these children. I enjoy helping them learn and working with them.  We worked on the many projects over the past school year.  One project is the coding and programming circuits, another project we have worked on is coloring and making Christmas ornaments.  on top of the projects, we have been on may field trips.  All of these were fun and good learning opportunities for the kids. My favorite field trip was the pumpkin patch.  I have enjoyed my time as peer tutor and working with these kids.

It was the year 2022, there was a girl who lived a pretty fair life. Every day she would get up at 6:30 a.m. and begin getting ready for school. She didn’t much like school, but boy she hated missing it more. Her days at school didn’t consist of much other than hanging around with maybe two friends and doing tons of school work that she had no motivation for. Little did she know all of that was about to change. One day she got into a situation and had to change one of her classes. She went from playing with electricity to being welcomed into a room with a bunch of kids and teachers she didn’t know. She was, of course, shy her first week in the new class, but that went away pretty fast. Over time she went from being shy to waking up every day just for that class. She never knew that one class could change her whole world. Those kids she helped out every day became her closest friends. They gave her a permanent smile, hope, and love with just the thought of them. Before them, she was lost and in a sad state. They gave her purpose, and happiness, and inspired her in so many ways. The teachers became her role models and a safe place to come to. She never really had that in high school. No one was ever concerned about her problems. This new class she got made her who she is today. Over the summer she cried so hard because that was all about to go away. She was about to move schools, so she thought. The first day of school came around and she was preparing to go to another school. She was told that morning that she wasn’t moving schools. She was overwhelmed with tears of happiness because that meant she could keep the people who gave her life. I am that girl and you are that group of kids. Ms. Anita, Ms. Lisa, and Mrs. Bartley, you are those adults that I found safety and comfort in. So I want to thank you for all you’ve done and gave me.

My story to my peers and teachers of how they permanently changed me for the better.
