The Holler’s first week-long camp is over, but not forgotten. Needless to say, it was a lot of fun and we are looking forward to continuing this trend. Now that I’ve plugged the camps let’s get down to the topic of discussion; what did we cover during our camp at Owsley and how did it go? Let’s start with day one.
Day 1 – Drones
I’m sure you know which of our members handled this camp. That’s right, it was none other than Chad Perry, the Holler’s drone expert, and frequent builder of said drones. During his time with the students, Chad introduced them to the world of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and how they could get their own drone license so they can fly legally and even make some money doing so!

Day 2 – Robotics
There is more to a robot than just plugging up cables flicking the power switch. There is also a mountain of CODE buried deep within that makes them operate accordingly and Chad introduced the students both to the robots and the code that runs them.

Day 3 – 3D Animation
Using Blender, an open-source 3D modeling and animation program, students learned how to make their very own animations. Alex Smith introduced them to the software with a guided lesson and then we set them loose and allowed each of them to make their own animation. The animations are currently getting complied together and we will be releasing them soon so stay tuned to theholler.org to see those.

Day 4 – Video and Photo
Drones, Robots, and Animation; how could we top that? Easy, let me introduce you to the Exposure Triangle. Cameras are more than just a point-and-click device and we showcased that to the students with a Long Exposure exercise (See video below). With a basic understanding of Shutter Speed, we then talked about how to control your F-stop (Aperature) and ISO so you don’t end up with a grainy video or photo. After all the lecturing and exercises we let the students loose with either a camcorder for video or a DSLR for photo and video. Before you ask, yes, we will definitely be sharing their work soon!
