Kentucky’s Appalachian Renaissance Initiative
In 2013, the Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative and seventeen member school districts in rural southeastern Kentucky were awarded a highly competitive Race to the Top District grant by the U.S. Department of Education. With this support, KVEC launched its Appalachian Renaissance Initiative (ARI) to share resources across the region, personalize student and professional learning, empower leaders, revitalize local communities, and prepare students for next-generation college and career paths.

A New Story for Appalachia: Investing in Educators with Ideas
With support from a Race to the Top District Grant, the Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative (KVEC) has brought together 17 school districts in rural southeastern Kentucky to prepare Appalachian students and communities for the next generation of education and work. KVEC believes that the best ideas come from educators right there in in the region. To spur this vision forward, KVEC established the Appalachian Leadership Laboratory to give visionary educators the autonomy and support to collaborate and innovate. With that investment, educators are daring greatly — and transforming teaching and learning across their region.

Silicon Holler: Training Students for the New Economy, Here in Appalachia
The Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative is bringing together 17 schools districts in rural southeastern Kentucky to prepare students and communities for the 21st century. With support from a Race to the Top District grant, KVEC is helping students build the skills, habits, and experiences to succeed in the new digital economy — and equipping them to help build that new economy at home in Appalachia

Empowering Our Students to Stay: Stopping the Export of Our Best Natural Resources – Our Youth
Appalachia has long been a region known for the export of its natural resources. For too long, talented young people have also left the region. WIth support from a Race to the Top District grant, the Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative and its 17 member school districts are working to empower students to stay in the region and build a brighter future for themselves and their communities. The STARS program (Students Transforming Appalachia through Real-world Solutions) helps students become entrepreneurs, policymakers, leaders, and problem-solvers in their schools and across southeastern Kentucky.

Appalachia Rising
Change is happening in what some folks might consider one of the most unlikely places in America. In rural Kentucky, students are building robots. Classrooms are traveling through the mountains. Educators are daring greatly. The Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative and its 17 member districts believe that there’s no challenge in Appalachia that committed educators and engaged kids can’t solve. With support from a Race to the Top District grant, they have launched the Appalachian Renaissance Initiative, and they hope their story will inspire other regions to come together to transform education for students and communities.
