The 2nd and 3rd grade classes at Jackson Independent School collaborated with community agencies and individuals to learn about life cycles and grow plants in a greenhouse environment. Before the end of the school year, students had transplanted into raised beds, plants that had started from seeds in cups. Each student (about 60 total) took several plants home to continue caring for and learning about plant maturation. Plants, that we had excess of, were donated to our city’s first Community Garden. It is our plan to continue to care for the crops in our raised beds throughout the summer months with students who live in close proximity to the school. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Mrs. Arrowood and watching students learn with such an excitement. We will definitely continue this project because the student learning was much greater with activities such as this. Project SPROUT and C.Y.C.L.E.S. were both successful STEM activities that enhanced student learning and provided community collaboration.
