The science unit of instruction I implemented was entitled Wondrous Waves: A Study of Sound. Through the implementation of first grade Next Generation Physical Science Standards, students participated in collaborative, interdisciplinary, relevant investigations relating sound. This includes developing an understanding of the way in sound travels. Additionally, students conducted numerous investigations that allow them to determine the effect of different variables on sound. It provided them with an opportunity to utilize tools in the design as well as construction of sound devices for the purpose of communication. This unit included such activities as exploration with tuning forks, creating a paper cup telephone, experiments with pitch and volume along with learning about the structure and function of ears. Additionally, students were able to research various sounds using technology, create a musical instrument, and build a prototype for an ear.
