My grant project “Lights, Camera, Action, problem solving comes to life,” is underway! However, not without some challenges that , fortunately, were not as problematic as I thought. I have effectively used the HUE HD cameras in my classroom to have my Algebra II students complete a formative assessment on using the Quadratic Formula! The most powerful observation for me, thus far, is that I am actually seeing authentic work from my students. I gave each student a different problem and they created a video and submitted it to me in Google Classroom. I am now able to view each video to watch for specific areas where students may be struggling. As I am watching these videos it is overwhelming really, when I think of how this compares to having them complete a problem on paper. There are so many factors that can skew the reliability of student work. Did they ask another student for help? Did they just right an answer and not show steps? Did they copy one step, but maybe did some work on their own? There are many unknowns when we just look at a piece of paper. It is so exciting to actually sit and watch as a student processes through the problem. I am most surprised at the simplicity of the task but yet the complexity of what I can discover about what a student really understands and can do independently. At this moment, using the video lessons for formative assessment appears to be of most value. However, the students and I are brainstorming at many other ways that we can incorporate the use of the Hue HD camera in our classroom! Stay tuned! 🙂
