Thursday, May 4, 2017 will be an amazing day in Hazard for drone enthusiasts! The inaugural KVEC/HCTC Drone Race for high school students will take place at the First Federal Building on the Hazard Community and Technical College campus beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative (KVEC) is sponsoring the event as part of the Appalachian Technology Initiative, an initiative to bring high-tech learning opportunities to students in the region. Students are currently building first-person-view racing drones to be flown during the event. Students will then use the newly constructed drones to fly in the upcoming race. Schools currently planning to participate include: Belfry High School in Pike County, Betsy Layne High School in Floyd County, Knott County High School, Lee County High School, Sheldon Clark High School in Martin County, Middlesboro High School (Middlesboro Independent School System), Owsley County High School and Wolfe County High School.
On the morning of May 4th beginning at 10:00 am, student participants will be involved in registration, drone education sessions, exhibitions and demonstrations. Practice runs of the drones will be conducted to ensure each has its own radio frequency. Lunch for students and school officials will be provided. At 1:00 p.m., the indoor drone racing will begin
The event is being held in collaboration with HCTC and will lead to a 5:00 p.m. MultiGP sanctioned drone race. The MultiGP race is open to all-comers, including students of any age/grade level who want to participate.
