During the 2014-2015 school year, Rosspoint Elementary 4th graders studied Kentucky History, rocks and minerals, and layers of the earth. At the beginning of the year students had no formal prior knowledge of Kentucky History and little prior knowledge in science. Students average beginning of the year test scores were 50%. After learning Geography of our state, Kentucky History and Historical Figures, Physical Science of Kentucky, rocks and minerals, and layers of the Earth, students average test scores were 80%. I believe the success of this project is based on three things: opportunity for new experiences, hands on\discovery learning techniques, and real world application. Students were able to attend a field trip to Cumberland Gap State Park to tour the Gap Cave. They applied the science and social studies knowledge to explain how early settlers traveled through the Gap and what formed it. They also identified common plants, animals and minerals while ‘in the field’. I think they felt like real scientists! My favorite quote from the day was from one of my boys who said, ” We went on a real adventure!”
