Let’s consider “Banners” vs. “banners”. What’s the difference? Besides one being capitalized of course.. Well, throughout history banners have served a purpose in many types of scenarios. They inform, motivate, and even warn. Banners (with the capitol ‘B”) were often used as markers for travelers passing through a certain unknown region or territory. Armies in ancient times showcased banners which depicted their movement for overseers of the war tactics. The information that a Banner reveals can be very powerful, packing so much information to the viewer through simple and well chosen images, words, and sometimes even color.

My hope for the students participating in the Banner Art Project is to take this opportunity and inform. What is it about your particular community that sets it apart from others? It’s assets. Am I asking you to brag? Well, maybe. But in that collective sharing of positive information we have the potential to showcase what makes Eastern Kentucky so wonderful and unique.

I’ll be assisting students in many areas of the development of their Banner. From what they want others to know about their region, school, and community, to the choice of layout and color references that accompany their design.

So as we enter into the beginning stages of the “Banner Art Project”, I suggest that all participants be considering what they would like for others to know about their region. That’s the best place to start, for that will carry us through to presenting your Banners to the world.

Thanks for the opportunity to work with you and your students!
