Students were shown a number line to create questions. The question they chose was “How does a number line relate to the real world”? I showed them a gas gauge, dip stick, measuring tape, tape measure and etc. We then discussed fractions on the number line and how we use them in real life. Students measure 4 inches on paper towel roll and cut. Then they had to measure in 1/8ths between the whole numbers and mark on paper towel roll. Students painted and then had to cut every 5/8ths. Students took their pieces and glued them together. The created ornaments out of the pieces. I demonstrated what an ornament would look like if pieces where not cut even. Below you will find their finished ornament. Students had an understanding of how number lines relate to the real world after this lesson.
