The American Hollow has many traditions that follows the lives of the Bowling family as they fight to survive in dirt-poor mountains. Iree gave birth to 13 children, but only two have left to fight for better lives in Ohio while the rest have married and started their own families back home. Uneducated, unemployed, and violence and alcoholism go for serious issues.
