Dr. Katrina Slone visits with Harlan County Schools Assistant Superintendent Brent Roark in the classroom of James A. Cawood Elementary School Teacher Chamayne Johnson. Slone was visiting the Harlan County School District to see firsthand new technologies being implemented for student use as part of a $29 million federal grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Education to her agency, the Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative, for the Appalachian Renaissance Initiative. Here students use the Learnpads which have given teachers new strategies for student learning. Through ARI, KVEC is serving 17 school districts.
