We use Reading Plus for the primary Tier 2 intervention, however, I also use the offline skills reports to form Tier 3 RTI groups which are pulled for individualized instruction. Thanks for your questions and comments! It’s nice to know people are actually reading my posts! 🙂

Another formative assessment tool I use is embedded within Reading Plus. An online reading instruction and practice platform, Reading Plus is designed to build capacity,…

Our district uses Frontrow, now Freckle, for individualized reading and math lessons. It is excellent for providing intervention. Reading Plus sounds like a program we could look into if we decide to change programs in the future. Thank you for the wonderful details.

Do you all use these programs as supplemental intervention tool or do you use them as the students’ primary intervention? We have Reading Plus for reading and ALEKS Math for math at our school, and we have been instructed to simply put students on the program for their entire intervention class period, but we have not seen as much growth as we…[Read more]

One of the awesome formative assessment tools I use is Flipgrid! Flipgrid (www.flipgrid.com) is a website I use to record student responses for a number of different activities: book reviews, argumentative claims, critical current events, reflection on understanding of a topic or standard, etc. The uses are limitless!

I agree completely! We are struggling now to operate with limited funding and a shrinking student population. We had to consolidate our elementary schools two years ago and the middle and high school last year. Many of our teachers are worried what the future holds. These new requirements will make it nearly impossible for our district to stay afloat.

I use assessment data from various sources. We use STAR Reading data, Reading Plus data, MAP data, CERT data. We also use a student data notebook to allow students to do self-reflection and set goals. You can set this up using classroom assessments as well, but it has to be consistently used throughout the year to be effective.

Students use a data notebook to analyze assessments and performance. We update them every few weeks to keep it fresh in their minds.

Fantastic! Tried and true. John Hattie identified “Self Reported Grades” as 2nd among 252 other factors to increase student achievement( https://visible-learning.org/hattie-ranking-influences-effect-sizes-learning-achievement/)

I am new to student data notebooks this year so I know that I have a lot of room to grow. Tony, what all is included in your data notebooks? Also what grades are they used with? We currently use them with 4th-6th grades, but would love for this to expand all the way down to K. I would appreciate any insights on data notebooks that you or anyone…[Read more]

Thanks Johnny! If anyone has any suggestions as to how our district can meet these goals with limited staffing, please share!

I agree… we are constantly being asked to do more with less. My only suggestion that is realistic is to use teacher talents and strengths and use those to maximize these goals.

A great assessment strategy I use is to follow up any summative with student analysis so they will take ownership of their performance. Formative assessments are used throughout lessons to guide instruction.

I love this strategy. I’ve recently started with data notebooks for our weekly target checks in grammar. Students have to keep up with their original scores and the retakes and analyze their progress in each skill. I’m hoping to be able to incorporate this with on-demand writing as well.

My biggest concern regarding rich curriculum after reviewing the Academic Course Codes is the requirement of staffing for my school. Our financial situation in our district does not allow for more staffing to support the suggested courses. Our school will do the best we can to meet the requirements through creative scheduling.

Yes, one of the biggest concerns of Opportunity and Access is the available resources and the differences from district to district. Whole Child Supports was eliminated after the first federal review asked that schools not have a choice in what services they chose for accountability. The committee wanted all to be required. KDE elected to omit…[Read more]
