The Porter Elementary Community Problem Solving team project was āDonāt Be Scared ā¦Be Preparedā. The students were inspired to select a project concerning natural disasters because members of the team have been affected by different natural disasters and they know how scary they can be. For that reason, they wanted to learn about natural disasters that have occurred in their community and what people can do to be prepared for natural disasters. They have taken this information and shared it with other children in our community to help them be less scared.
The CmPS team has created documents to share important information about preparedness with members of the community and to raise awareness. Another activity the students accomplished was writing and performing a skit that shows the importance of being prepared during a natural disaster. The skit was recorded and was shown during programs they sponsored. Then, the team members wrote and published a book about being prepared for natural disasters. Hardbound copies of that book have been donated to local elementary schools and the Johnson County Public Library. Additionally, they have printed paper copies of the book that has been distributed to children in the community. These books have been given out during programs and presentations the students have completed. Also, they are giving paper copies to all 4th grade students in Johnson County. Lastly, the students collected items, mostly through donations, to assemble sample emergency kits that were given to students who attended their programs. Some small items that should be used in an emergency kit, such as hand sanitizer, flashlights, and bandages, were put in the bags along with a list of all items that should be in an emergency kit.
I will also be attaching a file that provides photos and descriptions of the team’s project.
