After hearing Dr.Gusky speak last summer about Mastery Learning, it really opened my eyes to formative assessments. I have always used formative assessments but never as a tool to achieve Mastery Learning. This year at Flat Gap Elementary each teachers designed daily learning targets that are aligned with the standards. Then a formative assessment is given only on that daily learning target to gauge student understanding. Those students who do not meet the daily target then participate in Greyhound Grit TIme (GGT). GGT is a designated time for students to get 30 minutes of additional instruction that goes beyond what was taught during the class. GGT in my mind is a tutor session with students based on that days learning target. I am now using formative assessments as a tool to direct my instruction and to keep students from falling behind. We are now getting gets caught up every day instead of waiting till the end of a unit and it being too late. During Greyhound Grit Time students receive small group instruction that targets those skills that they did not get that day. Students are using data notebooks to help with student ownership. Within their notebooks, students write their daily learning target along with their score from their formative assessment. Students know if they need additional practice with that skill based on their score. With the implementation of this program, I feel better prepared and focused on my goal for each day! I know what I want my students to accomplish each day and use formative assessments to keep me informed on their progress.
