Through project-based problem solving, my second grade class researched ways to improve the environment by planting blight-resistant American Chestnut trees on reclaimed mine sites in Appalachia. Thanks to contributions from the Kentucky Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation, Appalachian Regional Reforestation Initiative, Green Forest Works and the US Department of Interior, the students were able to plant 32 native Chestnut trees in Pike County this past May. The students developed 21st century technology skills as they used Dell Chromebooks to complete research tasks and educate others about the importance of the American Chestnut tree and the need for reforestation.

This is a great project, Alice. I am planning to keep up on the progress growing those native Chestnut trees. When I visited your classroom I was amazed at the student’s technology skills. I had never seen 2nd grade students with that kind of research skills. Great work–both you and your students.
