One of the issues in any project that requires large amounts of data is the possibility of incorrectly entering data, mainly by errors in transposing. The biggest benefit of the iPad Pro was having the ability to directly receive measurements from the Leica digital tape measure. In these shots Shelby and Dakota are transferring measurements… -

Our game of science has been modified into two separate games and has gotten a new name, The Game of Alchemy. One version is being adapted into a board-type of game where the players will answer questions about chemical elements as they move toward chemical stability. The other version is a card-based game for multiple players that combines the…[Read more]

Originally we were planning on basing our feasibility study on algae production on surface pond. Due to the fact that the optimal growing season for algae is during the summer months and because surface mine maps aren’t always accurate as the location and current condition of ponds, we decided to collect samples from multiple sources in addition… -

Our project for replacing missing historical landmarks with augmented reality is moving along. We identified a site in downtown Hazard that we are working on. It is the old L&N suspension bridge that was torn down many years ago. All that remains is the stone “tower” that allowed access to the bridge and a support for the bridge just on the… -

Feasibility Study of Microalgae Biodiesel from Surface Mine PondsThis group has been in the process of developing the procedure they will use to measure the population of microalgae. This includes the possibility of using a spectrophotometer to give an estimate of population growth rather than using a hemocytometer. Samples will be collected…

Game of ScienceThe students have been hard at work on The Game of Science. As the rules and objectives are created the game itself is evolving into something akin to Pokeman or Magic the Gathering. Once everything is finalized, we will be working with a local printing company to produce a limited number of decks of cards.

Using Augmented Reality to Replace Missing Historical LandmarksDuring the first part of the project we have concentrated on familiarizing our group with computer aided design or CAD. We have worked with several different CAD programs including AutoCad and Sketchup but have decided on using Vectorworks due to the ease of use and availability.…

Using Augmented Reality to Replace Missing Historical Landmarks
Test data indicates a need for increasing the variety of teaching strategies in our classrooms. Current methods, while often efficient, may neglect other powerful strategies. When historical sites are damaged or lost, there may be adequate records, such as photographs or other…[Read more]

Feasibility Study of Micro-algae Biodiesel from Surface Mine Ponds
Often, science classroom experiences lack relevance to students. Student surveys have often indicated that this lack of valid material can result in lower achievement. Students may find laboratory experiments boring because they aren’t really experiments but repeated exercises t…[Read more]

The Game of Science
Student engagement has long been a problem of practice, especially in science. We have considered the fact that this is a major contributing factor in some of our test scores. We constantly observe the student that doesn’t feel they quite “get” science and our proposal would be to develop a fun, science-based, card game…[Read more]
