My Transitional English classes are working either individually or in groups of two to write a K-2 children’s story. We have spent about 5 class periods working with published children’s stories and analyzing the story arc and layout of the story. We are looking at text structure and features. The students have been reading children’s story and have started developing one of their own. They also must decide WHICH TEXT must go on which page and what artwork will be included on the page. I have seen some of my students, who are usually very disnisterested, become excited and I am so amazed at some of their “big ideas” so far. I have everything from a cyborg puppt, Timmy’s magic shoes which help defeat a dragon, Frankenstein and Plankton go to Space, and the adventures of a Classroom Pet. I’m excited to see what their final stories look like!
