Wed. Jan, 7th was a bitterly cold day in Pikeville, Ky. Many schools in our region were closed due to the low temps and slick conditions. We decided to test the garden beds by covering them prior to the cold snap with two layers of Grow Guard (Agribon) row covers. One layer was GG 30 and the other was GG 51. The outside temperature read 10 degrees around 1:00, but were a warm 20 degrees inside the low tunnels. This 10 degree difference allowed our plants to tolerate the cold spell quite nicely. You can see they look a bit limp in these photos, but perked right up when the sun came out. Right now the beds are covered with just GG 30 and are doing fine! Who would think a school could harvest salad right from their own backyard?
