Students Rising to New Virtual Heights

On March 6th and 7th, Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative (KVEC) had the pleasure of hosting and participating in concurrent education sessions at Wolfe County High School as well as Floyd Central High School.

The educational sessions focused on students ranging from 8th grade to high school seniors. Featured keynote speaker at both campuses was Annette Jett. In the keynote address, speaker Annette Jett, MBA, emphasized the importance of learning the skill of Self-Advocacy.  As part of a four-step process which promotes Self-Awareness, Self-Esteem, Self-Determination, and Self-Monitoring, students were encouraged to lead a self-directed, goal-oriented life that utilizes their specific skill sets and highlights their interests. Students were asked to visualize a destination that they wanted to achieve in the area of career, education or independent living, and then set that goal into motion by folding a paper airplane, aiming it in the direction they wanted to go, and then sending it into flight. The analogy was made that with preparation, energy, and direction, you can implement and achieve a plan, even if it hits an obstacle or it needs to take an alternate route.

The Holler team hosted one of the education sessions, demonstrating potential careers in the exciting field of digital technology.  Presenters covered areas including the appeal and constant expansion of the gaming industry, the possibilities provided by virtual reality and the advantages of computer simulation.

The students were happy to find connections between their personal interests or hobbies and emerging technology and digital commerce opportunities in the region.  The virtual reality and motion capture session featured an HTC Vive headset, allowing for a full range of motion and immersion experience in the demonstration.
