For the Love of Reading Project update: The purpose of the For the Love of Reading project was to get useful handheld assistive technology devices into the hands of students with general cognitive disabilities or specific learning disabilities. Students with cognitive and specific learning disabilities in reading often have difficulty with reading text at their grade placement levels. Special education teachers often provide assistance by acting as readers and providing direct instruction in reading skills such as fluency and reading comprehension. The learning styles and needs of young children require tactile, visual, and auditory experiences. Young children need practice and repetition with fluency and comprehension. The specific devices to be used are the 2 HP 11.6″ Stream Laptop PC and 6 RCA 7″ Tablet 8GB Quad Core, Includes Keyboard and Case along with a HP Printer. This technology will enable them to improve basic reading skills and will facilitate the development of independence in dealing with written material utilizing various programs such as Reading A-Z, Carl’s Corner and RAZ Kids reading websites along with Accelerated Reader. The aim of this project was to provide students with small, portable devices that can eventually be used independently in a variety of settings, allowing them to ā€œtake chargeā€ of their own learning to a greater extent. The project benefited both students and teachers in multiple ways. Students gained an invaluable sense of competence and an enhanced belief about their ability to overcome obstacles. And, as students became proficient in use of these tools, teachers had more time to focus on expanding the content being taught and to give more opportunities for deepened understanding of material. Teachers also had more time available to work more with students on an individual basis. Students were taught to use the technology in the resource class setting with opportunities to practice with support. controlled by the teacher. Students will be able to work in multiple modalities (tactile, visual, and auditory) that will motivate them to practice new concepts and enhance their ability to share their thinking and learning. It allowed instant and corrective feedback. Students were engaged during various Literacy Work Stations (Accelerated Reader, IXL, Sight Word Apps). These stations were differentiated; based on each student’s learning ability. The Laptops and tables allowed me the opportunity to download many books in different ability levels and share the books. This allowed for repeated practice with pronunciation and definitions of words and, as a result, reading fluency and comprehension was improved.
