Bridging the Gap Inch BY Inch
As an employee for over 28 years, I have seen many students struggle with the concept of Math because they cannot connect these concepts to real-life settings. So my project is to not only teach the students how to understand these concepts but to make this connection. They will learn how to read a ruler, yardstick, and tape measure with over 80% accuracy in order to create picnic tables for the VA center in Hazard, and the Nim Henson Nursing Home in Jackson, KY . They will also understand the concept of understanding the scale method and learn how to calculate percentages. With the lessons that we have already experienced, one young man stated, “Why haven’t we been doing activities like this all along. I can understand this.”
