Our school’s problem of practice centers around ways we can increase our writing test scores. While reading “Visible Learning for Literacy” I read a great section on writing and the effect size of different components of the writing process etc. Here is what there research concluded:

Effect Size for Writing Programs = 0.44
Effect Size for Teaching Students to Summarize = 0.63
Effect Size for Concept Mapping = 0.60
Effect Size for Concept Mapping = 0.60
Effect Size for Feedback = 0.75
Effect Size for Teacher Clarity = 0.75

I found it interesting that feedback held the highest effect size when compared to all these other components. With this knowledge I would like to research more ways teachers can provided effect, timely feedback for the writing process. This can be especially hard at the elementary level. Does anyone have any suggestions. I know when I try to conference with students it takes a huge chunk of time and it gets hard to manage behaviors while I am conferencing.
