My art students were interested in creating art from clay. We decided to see if more students would score higher on a quiz after lecture or a hands-on activity. We purchased clay, tools, and a potter’s wheel with our money. Before students worked with the clay they listened to a lecture about the different stages of clay, different methods of making pottery, and terms pertaining to ceramic work. Students then took the first quiz. The then created art by using the potter’s wheel and went to the process of firing, glazing, and firing a second time. They then took the quiz a second time. The results were graphed. We found that most students scored better after the hands-on activity.
