    News Article #2:

    My Top 3 Formatives

There are many assessment practices that I use that have yielded tremendous benefits for students. I use formative assessments for quick, continual assessing of student learning. The purpose of formative assessments is to capture data to inform my instruction. It lets me know which students are struggling…[Read more]

    News Article:

“When am I ever going to use this?”

The biggest question I hear more than I enjoy is, “When am I ever going to use this?” No teacher likes to hear this, especially when they’ve worked so hard to create notes, practice, and activities for that topic, and especially when the subject is the teacher’s passion. It’s almost insult…[Read more]

That’s so incredible! Next year, we are merging our middle school with our high school, and we also hope to be able to offer the 7th and 8th grade students the ATC courses. We believe it could greatly help their interest and attendance, as well as help them start their career discernment and career paths early.

Right, and you hate to tell students who really want (and need) to take extra dual credit or AP classes that they cannot take them until they get their elective classes taken. Especially when dual credit and AP can get them ahead on their college coursework, which saves them time and money in the long run.

I definitely understand the struggle your school is facing, as mine is also facing it. We have multiple teachers teaching multiple preps (some even teaching 5 preps!), and I wonder how our curriculum development and instruction would dramatically change if we only had 1-2 preps. But like you said, we just simply don’t have the funding to hire that…[Read more]

Were you trained on Google classroom or did you just start playing around on it to figure out all of the different capabilities it offers? I would love to attend a training on how to use google classroom in a math classroom. I’m especially interested in how students would show their work.

Do you enter in a grade for each specific standard? For example, if the exam covers 6 standards, do the students receive 6 different grades?

I also love using ACT as a bellringer in class. It helps students get familiar with the language of the ACT and how questions will be asked. And it shows tremendous benefits when students can practice ACT daily throughout the year, as opposed to just the month before the ACT as a “cram” session.

Do you all use these programs as supplemental intervention tool or do you use them as the students’ primary intervention? We have Reading Plus for reading and ALEKS Math for math at our school, and we have been instructed to simply put students on the program for their entire intervention class period, but we have not seen as much growth as we…[Read more]

    Whiteboards:
There are many assessment practices that I use that have yielded tremendous benefits for students. The first is a very simple, yet effective practice that I use regularly. After guided practice on an objective, I will use my classroom set of whiteboards to formatively assess students. I will post a problem on the board. Students will…[Read more]

    • Lucy I am a kindergarten teacher and I use white boards for assessment almost daily. Like you, I will post a problem on the board and have students write the answer and then we all show our answer at the same time. I also dovreading problems and havecstdents sound our words using their boards. There are endless opportunities for assessment using…[Read more]

After reviewing Kentucky’s Uniform Academic Course Codes webpage, our school’s concern is having the time and staff to get all of the required credits, especially with the many dual credit and AP classes offered that many students choose to take in addition to their regular course load. We are worried that students will not have enough room in the…[Read more]

  • Our grant was starting a dance team at Breathitt High School. Our new dance team has been working hard on a “Greatest Showman” themed tap and jazz dance that we will perform this weekend at the Beta Conference in Lexington! The kids are so excited to perform. They love the tap shoes and costumes that we were able to purchase!

  • Project Title: Modern Dance

Breathitt High School is creating a modern dance team that will perform a mix of hip hop, tap, and modern dance routines at different events. Breathitt has never had any sort of dance team so this will give students the opportunity to express themselves through this creative outlet.
