Update on “Mouthing About Math” grant: My goal has been to promote studentsā reflection, reasoning, and explanation of math practices in order to help deepen their level of understanding; thus the title Mouthing About Math. In order to provide models of rich forms of discourse and monitor studentsā practice of reflecting, reasoning and explaining their math practices I have been using a Canon VIXIA HF G30 Full HD Camcorder to video student conversations as they develop a response to math situations. We have also videoed students as they individually demonstrated how to solve math problems. I have also created videos where I demonstrate how to solve math problems to serve as tutorials. We have used Success for All Power Teaching Math strategies to guide studentsā discussions when solving math problems in collaborative groups and the SFA/PTM rubric for scoring their responses which award points for providing the correct answer, the correct process, and explaining which of the eight mathematical processes the group used to solve the problem. We often uploaded videos on our YouTube channel on a daily basis and links are posted to our Twitter account. We currently have 96 YouTube subscribers and 90 Twitter followers. A MAP assessment and Mastery Connect Benchmark assessment were administered in December prior to our purchase of the Canon Camcorder and we did another round of assessments the end of March. We will share our findings at the April Expo. (For those who canāt wait for the results, I can say that my principal and I were both very pleased with the studentsā growth!)
