Pi Day is coming soon! A great book to read and interact along with your students is Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi by: Cindy Neuschwander. We also measure circular little Debbie cakes (fudge rounds, oatmeal pies, etc) to determine the ratio of the circumference and diameter of a circle is always the same. You can also add in a Pi scavenger hunt where students find circular objects throughout the room or school to measure the ratio and see it is always the same no matter how big or small a circle is.
I also have a Pi memorization contest to have a little competitive fun. I give the students the paper shown in the picture and then we have a contest. We had one student memorize 95 places one time! If nothing else they all walk away knowing 3.14! The 8th grade teacher and I combine classes on this day so it is fun for us to get to collaborate together. And a good review for 8th grade.
Happy Pi Day! If you have an activity you enjoy on Pi day please share!2 Comments-
