My materials are at school and I am at home! But I wanted to post some links and share the awesome STEAM/coding tools we have been working with. The site isn’t letting me link directly for some reason, but check out ozobot DOT COM, playosmo DOT COM, and makewonder DOT COM.
Just let me know if you have any questions about these! They have been…[Read more]

We have been using our robots and technology to work on coding skills, as well as having a lot of fun learning these skills! We were planning to integrate our robots into our Special Olympics preparation, as well as have an event to share our resources with some friends from other classes, but those are on hold for now.

As a co-teacher in a large self-contained and resource special education unit, I service many students with Autism and other significant disabilities. While we work hard every day to help our students succeed with their basic academic skills, we sometimes struggle to incorporate hands-on experiences, especially in the areas of Science, Technology,…[Read more]

The members of the group worked together explaining the campaign, getting students to sign and take the pledge and passing out the bracelets. We handed out over 400 bracelets. The students enjoyed spending time together and…[Read more]

We have made close to $500 so far with our student business, which we are using to restock our coffee cart. The students are learning how to count and handle money and inventory.

Our coffee cart is going great! My students with disabilities love taking orders and helping to fill them and deliver coffee. It has helped them get to know all the faculty and staff and socialize more within the school. Coffee Fridays were so popular, we are now also serving coffee on Tuesdays.

My grant was for iPads for my special needs classrooms. Having the iPads allowed my students to hone many academic skills through the use of apps such as iXL and Teach Your Monster to Read. They were able to continue working on important skills during times when there was not an adult to work 1:1 with them, which was beneficial to their…[Read more]

Apps for Teachers 2 years, 9 months ago
One of the best apps I have found this year is Teach Your Monster to Read. My FMD students LOVE it! It is a game-based reading program. The website is always free and the app is $4.99, BUT is offered free every few months. If you sign up on the website, you’ll get an email when the app is on a discount or free offer. Even if you pay the $4.99,…[Read more]

I was so sad I couldn’t come to the TEACCH training KVEC did in December, but I’m happy I found this holler! Any tips for beginning a TEACCH style program for a nonverbal 5 year old? So far, I have tried a mixture of activities, with so-so results.

Being in a self-contained special education classroom means that my students get a 100% individualized education. Their curriculum is designed around who they are and what they can do, and my small class size means that I am able to devote one on one time to each of them daily. However, this also means there are times when I need to devote…[Read more]
